What do you commit to?
The 90-Day Gameplan
I received a mysterious letter in the mail today. The lettering on the envelope was familiar but there was no return address. It felt a little suspect to me. The last time I received a letter like this it was from a person incarcerated in a state prison looking for a "branding mentor."
I opened the envelope anyway.
The envelope contained a scribbly handwritten letter. The handwriting on the envelope was familiar because it was mine.
While at an event in January 2019, I wrote myself a letter documenting my commitments for 2019. The organizers of the event took my letter and held onto it for a year and dropped it in the mail to me this week. On one side of the paper was a 90-day "Gameplan" detailing the five things that needed to happen in the first quarter of 2019 to make me feel more pride, confidence, and excitement. Those were things like: define our company's 3HAG (our 3-year highly achievable goal), create more streams of revenue beyond just brand strategy, successfully launch Irrational Loyalty as a best seller, meet some pretty aggressive biz dev goals, and successfully recover from a FIRE we had in our office to bring everyone on the team back together under one roof.
On the other side of the paper was a heartfelt letter I wrote to myself in which I forgave myself for a really bad 2018 and gave myself encouragement to crush 2019's goals. I went on to document the commitments I was making to myself for 2019.
My commitments included the following:
To develop and launch a platform for sharing my passion and expertise in branding with exponentially more people than I could through either my company or direct consulting. This is to set me on a path to inspire 1 Million Brands by 2025.
To put systems, processes, and tools in place to create a radically more profitable business model.
To develop and activate a staffing and growth plan to build my company's DREAM TEAM.
I'm proud to say that my team and I crushed every one of those quarterly focus items AND the 2019 commitments I made to myself. I beamed with pride when I shared this document with my team this morning during our "gratitude" round at our daily huddle. And I thanked them all for believing in me and believing in us.
Here are my takeaways:
When I write goals and commitments down -- even if someone takes them away from me for a year -- I have a much better chance of achieving them
Honoring these commitments to myself wouldn't have been possible without my Dream Team on board.
I am going to do this every year. And I'm going to make my teammates do it too.
Speak it -- or write it -- into existence. You might be pleasantly surprised.
